Melbourne mum creates a towel that helps make bath time easy and safe.

Towelling Stories

When Pamela became a mother, she quickly discovered that bathing a baby is quite a challenging task. This slippery situation is also met with the difficulty of quickly wrapping them up in a towel. In those early days, when everything is new, bath time is often a two-parent operation. Pamela just knew there had to be an easier way to get through this daily routine. It was not long after, Pamela created Towelling Stories and the hands free baby bath towel. In this post, Pamela shares how it all went from idea to a business that is helping parents with an important everyday task.

After becoming a mum to our little princess, Olivia, almost two years ago, I thought there had to be a way to make bath times easier. My husband had always worked long hours and although that made some aspects of parenting somewhat difficult, the part that I found most challenging was bathing our precious little girl. Trying to get everything organised and within reach whilst keeping her happy and then eventually organising the bath was a job in itself but when it came to getting her out of the bath, I thought there had to be a better way to do this. Although reaching for the towel whilst supporting our newborn was tricky, it was when I heard stories of other mums using their teeth or neck to hold the towel whilst supporting their baby that I thought I could create something to help. So I got started researching and creating designs for what would become our Hands Free Baby Bath Towel.

The process from research to launch took almost a year! I think I was playing around with the design for half of that time and then "umming" and "ahhhing" about whether I should pursue it for a good part of the rest of the time. Now it’s finally here, I’m glad I stuck with it and thankful that my mum and husband supported me and helped me to see that it was an idea worth pursuing. I cannot even begin to count the number of times I had my poor mum sew a new design out of old towels and then play around with it until we eventually came up with the kite shape. The main focus of the towel was to try and find a way to make bath time a safer and even more enjoyable experience for babies and all mums and dads. It was also important to me to get it made in Australia so I was thankful to find someone in Melbourne that could make them for me.

The unique apron-style towel simply fastens around the neck with two press studs, allowing you to have both of your hands free to safely undress and bathe your baby. Once you have finished bathing your baby you no longer have to fumble to find a towel or use your teeth whilst trying to support a slippery baby as the towel is already on you. Simply lift your baby out of the water onto your chest, place the hood on your baby's head and use the sides to wrap and snuggle your baby. Simply unfasten the towel from around your neck with one hand when your baby is on the change table, keeping your baby snug and warm before you dress them.

In addition to making bath time safer and easier, our hands free baby bath towel is luxuriously long and wide, leaving plenty of towel to dry in between your baby's fingers and toes. It's large size also keeps you dry when bath time becomes playtime and your baby starts kicking and splashing in the water. Made from natural bamboo and cotton it is naturally soft, thick and ultra absorbent, keeping your baby warm after his/her bath.

Although it took a long time to design, at the end of the day, it's all worth it knowing that I can make bath time just a little bit easier for mums and dads and their babies.
